RC4WD presents: Super Scale Race Series RULES

Brought to you by: Rude Boyz RC Club

Calgary Alberta, CANADA

The Concept
Most events you are probably familiar with are a one day or two day event only. This is going to be different. The idea is to promote the scale realism aspect but also direct most of the focus towards quality off road driving and also cater to that inner need to compete. We have come up with a 8 race series. 4 races will be just you and your truck against the course. The other 4 races will be the same but you will have a partner to work with. Points are given out at each event and at the end of the series we will have our winners. Think of this like an RC version of a dart league or bowling league. At the end of the season we will have a banquet (assuming there is a large enough amount of drivers participating) where awards will be given out and we can socialize. Price of the banquet will not be included in the entry fee, this will be figured out later when we kn
ow the level of attendance and figure out prices.

Which truck to run?
In the 1:1 world there are generally a few truck classes. You have the street legal off road trucks, trucks taken to the trail on a trailer because they are not legal due to modifications of varying degree's and then there are full custom race worthy trucks of varying degrees. Each year all over the world there is a surplus of races geared towards the last two classes in the RC world but very few cater to the super scale street legal off road truck. This series is geared towards that group. If your RC Truck were a 1:1 truck... would it get a ticket for failing to meet the requirements of the motor vehicle act? If yes... then it will fail this competitions requirements as well. Do your best to be "street legal" in your build.
*UPDATE: Due to much debate on what constitutes a "super scale" truck, please consider the following:

Originally we thought "Super Scale" was an appropriate term to use for the name of this series but having listened to the feedback from our peers, it seems a better term to use would be "Uber scale" or even "Ultra scale". Super scale is being used more and more for the out of the box scale trucks like the SCX10 and the Ascender for example. We do not want those trucks in this competition unless they can be built to come across as "Ultra" in nature due mostly to the simple fact that they really are amazingly capable out of the box compared to trucks like the D90 as an example. We are not looking for a truck that can rule the world. We are looking for trucks that come across as very realistic and almost all equal in capability so that the onus lies on the driver to do well, not the truck! To help define this visually... here is an SCX10 that has been beautifully built that is almost perfect. Missing are the clear front 3 windows and a full interior with driver. Consider however how the truck looks and sits as an example of how your SCX10 or Ascender should look if you wish to take part in this series. Next season we will have no blacked out windows and trucks must have an interior and driver.

Ideally what we are after are the hard body trucks with hyper realism in their details. Take a look at these trucks for examples of what we mean by "uber scale" or "ultra scale":

Entry

*UPDATE: We recognize not everyone can make it for most of the races but would still like to come out even if its for just 3 or 4. For those of you who would like to do this, payment can be made on site and is $15 per event. You will still gather points and be in the running.

The entry fee is $80 (CDN) per driver for the entire series. $40 (CDN) for under 16 yrs of age. All proceeds will be documented in an open book ledger available here on the ONE10RC 4X4 blog for viewing should you wish to scrutinize the allocation of the funds. Money will be allocated towards covering the costs of the events for things such as flags or trail markers for example and the remainder towards prizes at the end of the year/season. Drivers will provide a current photo of themselves to 1tenrc@gmail.com who will be governing the administration of this series. Your photo will show up on your drivers profile here and on your score cards.

Series Format

As mentioned, this series will consist of 8 events. Due to the simple fact that not everyone will be able to attend all 8 races, points are only taken for your 6 best results. On the last day of the season and once all races have been run, we will throw out your two lowest scores. These will be marked on the score sheet here for viewing should you disagree after this has been done. This allows you to skip out of at least 2 races if you have to due to unforeseen circumstances and still possibly win the series. If you miss more than that.. well, then you need to hope to be in the top finishers for the races you do partake in if you hope to win. Simply put...it's a numbers game.

Roll Overs

If your truck rolls, you will get you a -15 penalty. Even if your truck lands back on its wheels... the penalty remains. The damage your real life truck would receive in such a roll over would most likely take the truck out of the competition or at the very least damage it so much that it would no longer be safe or qualify as street legal anymore. Bottom line... if you do not drive smart... you can lose big. The idea behind this rule is to slow drivers down, get them to focus on picking a smart and safe line to drive. When you go fast, and bash your way through... usually you will destroy your truck. Its not overly realistic to drive in this manner which is what we are promoting more than anything else. "Drive it like you are in it" is a great motto to remember for this series.

"HOG"

"Hand Of God" is when you (or any human being for that matter) uses their body in any way to relocate your RC truck either by picking it up, pushing it, nudging it or being in the way and it hitting your body altering its trajectory. When this happens, you will get a -20 penalty. This often happens if the truck gets stuck in such a way that there is no other way to relocate it due to being beyond stuck. We understand that you may not want your beautiful truck to break if it rolls so you may reach out to save it. This counts as a Roll Over penalty only (Judges discretion), not an HOG penalty. Again... we are promoting driver skill and realism as though this was your real truck and you were actually behind the wheel. If at any time your vehicle is stuck and needs to be freed, you are to use your partner in the Team driver events or if in a solo driver event, then use your winch (no penalty for this) or your tow rope. Under the witness of the judge, you can then use the tow rope and pull it with your hand to right your vehicle or drag it into the place you require it (no penalty for this). This is the only time a HOG is allowed. The tow rope must be stowed on the truck at all times before you resume the race.

Event Scoring

Each event will have X amount of gates placed. These numbers will change from event to event. Your truck must pass through the gates with all 4 wheels to get the 5 points that gate is worth. Touching the flag with the body of the truck is allowed. Touching the flag with the wheels negates the value of that entire gate and you can continue on to the next gate. There are no trail boundaries in place so you can get to the next gate any way you wish. Driver skill is always a factor.

Placing Points

First place: 20 points
Second place: 15 points
Third place: 12 points
Fourth place: 9 points
Fifth place: 6 points
Sixth place: 3 points
Participated: 1 point
DQ (disqualified) = 0 points
DNF/DNS = 0 points

*if you finish in the placings above when competing with a partner, you both receive those points. For example... 1st place: Both drivers receive 20 points each. If more than 1 driver score the same for the race, they all get the same points as well. For example, 3 drivers are tied for first... each of them gets 20 points each for that race.

Judging

We will be relying on you the participants to assist us in judging. After you have run your race you will then take a turn judging a driver. Please remember this... people have paid money to compete and are in this to win. Please do not cheat in any way by hindering the driver or helping. For example... pointing out a line you did which helped you during your run. Should we get wind of you doing so, you will get a disqualification for the day and score DQ (0 points) for that event. Don't risk it. After you have raced, you will need to judge. If you cannot judge, you need to make sure you have someone stand in for you. Failure to do either will result in a DQ for the day.

Race Schedule

Approximately every 2 weeks there will be a competition. Each event will take place at a different location with a different set of obstacles and course route. Solo driver and Team driver events will alternate. This means that approximately every 4 weeks you will race alone and every 4 weeks you will race with a partner. There may be some *BONUS* events that will take place during the season so keep your eye out on this site for these events. We will give you 15 points just for attending these other events. This is to encourage support for these other local events.

Event Registration

Make payment via cash or cheque in person or by email transfer to 1tenrc@gmail.com

Times will be provided for when the events take place and posted here and on the Rude Boyz RC FB page. First thing is the registration check in. You will need to provide your personal ID and have your truck inspected. Once all drivers have checked in and trucks inspected, then the event host will make an announcement indicating when approximately you will be racing. You can then leave for as long as you like off site if your race isn't until later in the day. There will always be some fun events taking place or show and shines, people setting up tables for selling/buying of items or anything else. If you wish to be one of these minor event hosts or run a table or other, please contact us at 1tenrc@gmail.com to discuss.

Team driver races

These races are exactly the same as the solo driver races with the following exceptions: Any and all circumstances that require your truck to be moved have to be done by your partner via winch or tow rope and using their truck. NO HOG at all. You both have to finish by crossing the finish line or face a DNF for that run. Every race day you will only get one attempt to complete the course... you need to make sure your truck is running well and you make it from start to finish. Come prepared. Drivers will be matched up via a random draw on the day of the event or should there be a blatant mismatch then strategically matched up by the course officials so that two relatively pro drivers or two newbie drivers do not get paired up together. We would like to see fairness across the board.

Repairs while on course

Each race is based on quality driving, not speed. There is however a max time limit so that we do not have a back log of drivers waiting for their turn. That said, should you have a breakdown during a race, you must make your repair while on course. This is no different than many 1:1 truck races that exist. You should carry tools and parts on you or keep them fairly close by. You must move your truck just off course for the repair and you can run back to your vehicle to obtain what you need. Remember, while this is not a timed event specifically, you can possibly max out and get a DNF should the established max time limit run out on you. If you get a DNF, you will only have the points you have gathered up to the point of breakdown.

Super Scale Race Series Vehicle Requirements

Truck specs

Trucks must resemble a 1:10 scale replica of a 1:1 vehicle as close as possible. The vehicle must have A hard body -we will allow Lexan bodies this season but they will have weights added to them so they weigh approximately the same as a hard bodied truck, wipers, windows (rolled down side windows is fine), at least a drivers side mirror but ideally both sides is preferred, front and rear bumpers (molded or bolt on), front and back lights (do not need to work) and wheel/tires cannot protrude out from the fender wells more than 1/4 the over all width of the tire. You should have a driver and interior but in this first season we will allow full blacked out windows. Extreme lift kits are not allowed. In order to gauge your lift, using your tire size, the distance between the top of the tire and the fender well should be approximately no more than a 3rd of the tires diameter (measure your tires diameter, divide by 3 = X). Judges will use their best judgment on this during the tech check at each race.

Hard body vs Lexan weight differences:
We weighed several different hard bodied trucks and several different Lexan bodies and found that the heaviest hard body was 125.3 grams with the heaviest lexan body weighing in at 40 grams. A significant difference of approximately 70 - 80 grams. With each lead square on a strip weighing 7 grams, this means 10 squares will be added to your truck. At the tech check before race time, we will apply 5 weights on each side of your truck (inside).

Lift kits

It's actually illegal to have a massive lift kit in Alberta but its not overly enforced. Having a massive lift on your truck often means a ton of flex on your suspension system and ideally your truck should fall into the Scale Class 2 SORCCA rules most often in the rc world. This is a particularly tough category (suspension and ride height) to govern fairly so its going to be up to the judges decision on the tech day. The way the province tries to govern this topic in the real world by limiting the bumpers height. A bumper cannot be more than 22" above the ground in Alberta. With many bumpers being part of the molded body, we cannot really use that rule. We also realize that link suspension systems exist on the street so we cannot say "no link" and saying that your shocks are too long is also not representative of what goes on in the real world on trucks so in order to find a way to bring those ride heights down to a more "normal" scale type height so that the truck performs much like a real one and similar to the Uber scale RC trucks... we are going to use this lift ruling to try and reign you in. If your body wheel well is more than a third the wheels height above the tire... its too much. We will let you run of course but you get a 2 gate penalty per race until fixed. -10 points. Take a look at a street legal (aside from missing its bumper lol) lifted Toyota 4x4 in the image below. This is about a 6" lift kit if I had to guess? The space between the top of the tire and the wheel well is not very much... maybe 8 to 10 inches?

What most RC guys need to do is change how their brains are wired and stop thinking "monster truck" and start thinking "actual truck".

Bottom line... your truck needs to be the equivalent of a street legal vehicle to run.

Failure to meet spec

It is possible your truck doesn't have wipers or is missing lights or some other requirement. For each infraction, you get a penalty per requirement that you fail to meet. This penalty is applied at every race until the requirement is met. We do not want drivers showing up and not being able to run just because of something such as this. We are however attempting to encourage scale realism as much as possible. The exception to this rule is to tires. You get one chance to run on illegal tires and a -10 penalty that event. After that you get a DNS ruling until the tires meet our requirements. This is due to the reasoning that the real equalizer in most situations in off roading is from this category. To ensure the trucks are as close to equal as possible across the board... tires/wheels must be all the same approximately.

Accessories and scale points

There is no such thing as scale points in this series like you see in the SORRCA rules system. If you want to have your dog and canoe along for the ride while your truck races... all the power to you. It is however excess weight which could affect your vehicles ability to perform so we do not recommend this. Not to mention... its just plain silly to race with camping gear loaded up in your truck. We do however recommend accessorizing your truck with race related items such as NOS, Lift Jack, Spare Tire, Sand Rails, and that kind of thing. If your truck has transparent windows, you need to do your best to have an interior, a dash board at least and a visible driver. Please, no using of Minions, Sully, Zombies, Skeletons or that kind of thing. Attempt to have a scale driver in your vehicle. If you cannot provide an interior and driver, then use blacked out windows. Failure to have an interior and driver or blacked out windows will result in a -5 penalty until rectified. This ruling will change next season when you must have a visible interior and driver to compete.

Chassis

Stock rail, full rail with half tube, hand built custom (judges discretion) and tub chassis (cc-01) are allowed. With regards to the truggy style trucks. Your truggy needs to have full wells covering the tires or a flat deck and mud flaps to be considered legal. Open tires are not allowed as it allows debris to fly into other vehicles on the roads and is considered unsafe. Truggy style trucks without proper rear wheel covering are not street legal so cannot run.

Running gear

Trucks must have at least one solid axle (rear) and be shaft driven. No belt drive or motor on axle. Twin motors are allowed. The front of the vehicle can have independent suspension set up or solid axle. Transmission can be center mounted (SCX10) or fwd mounted (TF2). This series will allow for 6×6 trucks but the maximum wheelbase is 13” from front axle shaft to first rear axle shaft (center to center). Gates will be narrow and turns sharp at times so running a 6x6 will most likely be more of a hindrance than benefit.

Wheelbase and Track Width

Max Wheelbase: 13” center to center
Max Width: 10” outer edge of tire to outer edge of tire

Vehicle weight

Weight adding items that are functional or look scale in nature are allowed. For example, a product that bolts to the knuckle and appears to be a brake rotor is acceptable. A knuckle that is shaped to give more weight than stock components is acceptable. Lead weights that are inside your tires is also allowed. Lead weights stuck to axles and chassis is not allowed. You can stick them in your body though. Heads up... you will be more top heavy if you do. Your call.

Body

Bodies are required to be Hard body (ABS, Plastic, etc) and approximately 1" longer than the wheelbase of the vehicle. Trimming is limited to the fenders and must be kept to a minimum. Remember... your vehicle needs to resemble a "street legal" truck. To offset the difference between a hard body and a lexan body we will be adding 10 x 7gr lead weights to your lexan body in order to equalize the difference between the Ultra scale hard body trucks being much more top heavy and prone to roll over vs the lightweight lexan bodies. If the roof is removed, a full interior is required. Adding flairs over the wheel wells is allowed but the vehicle must still resemble a scale vehicle.

Wheels

All stock street appearing wheels are acceptable so long as they are scale in appearance and are not on the tire ban listed below. They must be 1.9” style or smaller. No stretching a 1.9 onto a 2.2 wheel.

Tires

No Pin tires. No modification to the carcass of the tire. Constructing “hybrid” or custom tires is not allowed. Tread can be trimmed, sanded, or siped, with nothing added or glued on.

Tires/wheels cannot protrude out from the body more than 1/4 the wheels total width approximately. This is up to the series officials to make the official decision on during your trucks pre-race inspection. They must also fit inside the wheel wells reasonably well and be of a street legal tire tread design. If your wheels/tires do not meet our requirements you will be allowed to run on them one time only but with a 2 gate penalty = -10 points. You will not be allowed again and any attempts to do so will result in a DNS ruling for each event until you meet the requirements. Come prepared or ask in advance prior to race day. Adding flairs is allowed but the vehicle must still resemble a scale vehicle.

The following lists are just examples of, but not limited to, the tires that are banned or approved as per this series. If you are not comfortable selecting your own tire please have it reviewed before the event, or have a back up plan to run an acceptable selection.

Acceptable Tire Examples

• Axial Maxxis Trepador Tires
• Axial Ripsaw
• Pit Bull Tires ROCK BEAST
• Pro-Line Interco TSL Super Swamper
• RC4WD 1.9" Super Swamper TSL/Bogger

These are just a few of the many types out there on the market. If in doubt, ask or bring another brand in case yours do not qualify.

Tire Ban List:

• Panther Leopards
• RC4WD Mud Bashers (tractor tires)
• Mud Slingers
• Losi Claws (all sizes, and types)
• Hot Bodies Rovers (all sizes)
• Hot Bodies Sedonas
• HPI Rock Grabbers
• Panther Cougars
• Pro-Line Chisels (all sizes)
• RC4WD Rocklin
• RC4WD X-Locks (all sizes)
• RC4WD Crazy Crawlers
• Imex Skulls and Bones
• Losi Bashers

Tires should be scale appearing, if it is questionable have it reviewed before the event, or plan to run a different tire. As new competition specific tires are released this list may be updated.

Electronics

All electronics including steering servos must be chassis mounted. Motor must bolt to chassis as well as the transmission or transfer case. Duel motors are allowed. Transmission disconnects (“Dig units”) and 4 wheel steering is not allowed to be used during the series. They can be installed but if you even use them in error out of habit you will get a DQ for the race. Be careful.

Water proofing

We realize not everyone can afford water proofing or knows how to do it and we do not want to restrict our drivers as a result so any potential water hazards that may exist will either be shallow in nature so that only axles will get wet or if they are deeper, they will be realistically deep (below windows) and there will be alternate routes available to take to avoid the water hazard. Its up to you the driver to find the best possible route to the next gate markers.

Can I change trucks through the series?

At no time are you restricted to driving the same truck throughout the series. You can change parts at any time, even during a race just so long as the changes meet with the series specifications otherwise penalties will incur. In the real world, upgrades and changes are done during a race series all the time. Different trucks are run from one race to another at times. This is more about the driver than the truck. That said... the truck you start with must be the truck you finish with on the day of the race. You can drive a different truck on the next event.

Examples:

Below are several images of trucks that qualify and do not qualify or would receive penalty points for failure to meet spec:

No Wipers. -5 penalty, No side mirrors. Another
-5 penalty. Note the blacked out windows
to compensate for lack of interior or driver.

Would not be allowed to compete. Tires protrude out
from the body half the width. Needs to be 1/4 tire width max.

Perfect. The tires sticking out would not normally meet
spec but the extended wheel wells take care of the problem.

The lift on this truck is border line too high. It would be a judges ruling to decide on this one. The front fender well by design is higher so we would look at the rear fender well. Might want to turf the ladder though or... use it as a sand ladder?

This truck totally meets spec although not exactly what
you would see someone compete with in the 1:1 world.
Doesn't matter though... this is the RC world.

Perfect. In every single way.

This truck has the tires protruding out too far and sadly
far too much wheel well cutting to resemble a street legal
vehicle any longer. It would not be allowed to race. No mirrors, no wipers, too much lift.. it looks scale but this is more suited to real racing or class 2 crawling perhaps.

"Street legal" does not apply to this truck but only because it does not have mud guards and full wheel covering in the rear.

Amost Perfect. -5 penalty for no wiper blades

Perfect

Perfect

Perfect

A fantastic scale truck but the tires protrude too far and
and there is no wipers or side mirrors.

The Gmade Sawback and this GI Joe Willys conversion
are 1:8 scale so do not qualify.

A great truck but not street legal due to many reasons.
Can you spot them?

Like the truggy example above, this too would get a penalty for not having wheel guards in the rear to prevent debris from flying up. -5 penalty for side mirrors as well.

Perfect.

To summarize:

All vehicles must be 4 wheel drive. Motor on axle vehicles are not allowed. Short course style vehicles are not allowed. These trucks are the equivalent of street legal 4x4 trucks. All bodies should allow 20-25% of the tire to be outside the wheel well or very close to it! Batteries, electronics and connectors cannot be openly visible. Electric powered vehicles only. No comp, short course, cut n shut, or pin tires are allowed. A tire must be a scale looking tire, either a licensed replica, or a non-licensed replica. If the vehicle is out of spec, or is without a driver/insert, you will likely be able to race that day (at the tech directors discretion), but by the next race event the vehicle must be fully legal as per the rules above. This exception to the rules is for the first event run only, and will not be made at any following events through the series. Vehicle drivers must appear human, no skeletons, creatures, aliens, storm troopers and so on.

Remember this is all about Scale trucks and testing the drivers skill. We want the trucks to be close to equal across the board so that the onus is on the driver to perform.
